General’s Historical Background

Akechi Mitsuhide was a distinguished general of Japan’s Sengoku period, widely known for his intelligence and military talent. Although he joined the Oda clan relatively late, his sharp strategic mind and calm judgment quickly set him apart, allowing him to rise as one of its key commanders.

He was highly skilled in both politics and diplomacy, navigating the complex relationships between the shogunate and the imperial court. His mastery of court etiquette and aristocratic customs played an important role in strengthening Oda’s influence over the Kinai region, making him a valuable asset to a rapidly expanding military power.

In warfare, Mitsuhide also demonstrated remarkable capability during the conquest of Tanba. Facing difficult terrain and well-fortified enemies, he applied advanced siege tactics and long-term strategy, establishing strongholds such as Kameyama Castle while gradually weakening opposing forces. Even while engaged in this campaign, he supported multiple fronts and ultimately helped bring Tanba under Oda control, earning significant land and the title of “Kanrei of the Kinai.”

At the height of his power, however, he initiated the Honnō-ji Incident, which led to his lord’s sudden downfall. Soon after, he was defeated at the Battle of Yamazaki. Legends even suggest he may have survived and later assisted Tokugawa Ieyasu. These enduring mysteries, combined with his brilliance, have secured his place as one of the most fascinating figures of the Sengoku era.
